Child Safety Features: Protecting Your Family

Garage doors are the largest moving object in most homes, weighing between 150 and 400 pounds. While modern safety features have dramatically reduced injuries, understanding and maintaining these systems is crucial for families with children.

Photo-Eye Safety Sensors

Since 1993, all garage door openers sold in the US must include photo-eye sensors. These devices project an invisible beam across the door opening about 6 inches from the floor. When anything breaks the beam.a child, pet, or object.the door immediately stops and reverses. Test these sensors monthly by waving an object through the beam while the door is closing.

Auto-Reverse Mechanism

In addition to photo-eye sensors, openers must have an auto-reverse mechanism that activates when the door contacts an obstacle. Place a 2x4 flat on the ground and close the door on it.the door should reverse within two seconds of contact. If it doesn't, your opener needs immediate service or replacement.

Pinch-Resistant Panels

Modern garage doors feature pinch-resistant panel designs that eliminate gaps between panels as the door moves. These designs prevent fingers from getting caught in panel joints.a common source of injuries, especially for curious children. If your door is older, consider upgrading to pinch-resistant panels.

Control Placement and Access

Wall-mounted controls should be placed at least 5 feet high, out of reach of young children. Explain to children that the garage door is not a toy and should never be activated as a game. Never let children operate the door unsupervised until they're old enough to understand the dangers and responsibilities.

Remote and Keypad Security

Keep remotes out of children's reach and treat them like car keys. Program unique codes for keypads and change them periodically. Many smart openers now offer activity alerts, notifying you via smartphone whenever the door is operated.helpful for monitoring when older children come and go.

Regular Maintenance

Safety features only work when properly maintained. Schedule annual professional inspections to ensure all safety systems function correctly. Between inspections, visually check sensors for alignment, test the auto-reverse monthly, and ensure the door moves smoothly without hesitation.

Teaching Safety

Educate children about garage door safety early. Never run under a moving door. Never play near the door tracks. Always wait for the door to stop completely before walking through. Keep toys and bikes clear of the door's path. These simple rules can prevent serious injuries.
